Invited Editorial in Journal of Gerontology Addresses Health of Rural Older Adults

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 7, 2023) – The Journal of Gerontology: Series B recently published an editorial co-authored by CCTS leadership members, a pilot funding recipient, and KL2 Scholar.

Brittany Smalls, PhD, MSHA, co-director of the DREAM Scholars Program and former DREAM Scholar herself, was first author on the article titled “Improving Health and Well-Being in Aging Rural America Through the Social Determinants Framework.”

Nancy Schoenberg, PhD, associate director of the CCTS and director of the Center for Health Equity Transformation; Allison Gibson, MSW, PhD, a CCTS pilot awardee; and Mary Lacy, PhD, a CCTS KL2 Scholar, were among the contributing authors.

The editorial outlines social determinates of health such as caregiving, technology, transportation, access to financial resources and health insurance, palliative care and advanced care planning, and cognitive decline and dementia, adding recommendations for programmatic and research endeavors.
