Implementation Science Library

Welcome to the CIDER's Implementation Science Library!

The goal of this library is to provide resources focused on seven primary topics related to designing studies that address the implementation of evidence-based practices and health-related innovations. Through a mix of seminal articles, video trainings, and web-based tools, CIDER's Implementation Science Library seeks to increase knowledge and skills related to the following topics:

light bulb to gear, implying idea to implementation

Additional Resources

In addition to these six topics, we wanted to point you to general resources that may be of use.

Journals

Many studies in implementation science are published in discipline-specific or health-focused journals. However, there are currently three peer-reviewed journals that are specifically focused on implementation science:

Implementation Science
This journal largely publishes articles in three main domains: protocol papers, results from randomized trials of implementation strategies, and systematic reviews on specific topics within implementation science.

Implementation Science Communications
This journal is a companion journal to Implementation Science that is open to a wider array of designs (e.g., process evaluations, economic evaluations, qualitative research).

Implementation Research and Practice
This journal specializes in implementation science that is focused on behavioral health (i.e., mental health, substance use), but articles still may have relevance for other health conditions.

Books

For overviews of key issues in D&I science, consider reading the following:

Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health: Translating Science to Practice
Brownson, R. C., Colditz, G. A., & Proctor, E. K. (Eds.). (2023). Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health: Translating Science to Practice (3rd ed.). Oxford University Press. https://doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197660690.001.0001
This edited volume by Ross Brownson, Graham Colditz, and Enola Proctor brings together an array of experts in implementation science with chapters focused on conceptual and design issues as well as chapters explicitly focused on implementation science in different types of settings. UK Libraries does not own this book, but it can be requested via Inter-Library Loan. It is typically in stock on Amazon.com.

Practical Implementation Science
Weiner, B. J., Lewis, C. C., & Sherr, K. H. (Eds.). (2022). Practical Implementation Science: Moving Evidence into Action. Springer Publishing Company.
This edited volume by Bryan Weiner, Cara Lewis, and Kenneth Sherr provides a series of chapters that describe key issues around intervention selection and adaptation, how to implement interventions and overcome barriers, and then how to evaluation implementation (i.e., implementation science). UK Libraries does not own this book nor is it available by inter-library loan. However, it typically is in stock for purchase at Amazon.com.

Conferences

There are two primary conferences focused on D&I research:

Academy Health organizes an Annual Conference on the Science of Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health. It is typically held in December in the Washington, DC-Maryland metropolitan area. Sign up to receive information on upcoming conferences.

The Society for Implementation Research Collaboration (SIRC) hosts a national conference on a biannual basis. The 2026 conference will be held in Minneapolis, MN on September 25-26, 2026.
