Center for Clinical and Translational Science

In 2004, the University of Kentucky convened a Research Summit to evaluate the status of clinical and translational research at the University of Kentucky. At the same time, the NIH convened a meeting of the scientific community to identify fundamental barriers to the acceleration of basic discoveries into clinical practice. One of the main barriers identified, the need for re-engineering research enterprise nationwide, was the impetus for Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA).

Interestingly enough, the results of the UK’s Research Summit embodied the very essence of the NIH’s CTSA, the need to transform the clinical and translational research enterprise at the University of Kentucky.

UK's response to this groundbreaking NIH challenge is to develop the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS). This Center will provide a centralized infrastructure consisting of key core facilities and services to help investigators, clinicians, and scholars from across the University and the Commonwealth of Kentucky to access the much needed resources to not only become educated on the conduct of clinical research, but to afford them mechanisms in which they can access a gamut of support services needed for the conduct of high quality clinical and translational research. These services will not end at the boundaries of the University.
