Th e nine key functions identified by NIH for the Clinical and Translational Science Award are easily recognized as essential to the conduct of clinical and translational science; they are the pillars that support investigators across the continuum of research from bench to bedside to community and back. Each section of this application documents and details how we have shaped UK’s response to this NIH Roadmap Initiative – reviewing all aspects of what UK currently has available, performing a Gap analysis for each key function, and identifying and developing initiatives to transform the conduct of clinical and translational science at UK, in our outreach communities in Kentucky and across the nation. In this process, we have also recognized the need for a means to knit these key functions together, to establish a culture of communication and access that is the hallmark of our CCTS, and to create a separate identify for our CCTS so that it truly constitutes an “academic home” for academic discipline of clinical & translational science. |

In a traditional academic unit, various structures provide this function. An academic department has faculty, a department chair and staff support, departmental committees and meetings to manage the business of the department and disseminate information; likewise, an academic college has its administrative offices, officers and staff, committees and meetings to conduct its business. The institution is able to fulfill its stated mission in so far as this organizational structure is repeated successfully at every level to meet the needs of its many constituencies. |

In our planning process, we have cobbled together a temporary administration from existing resources in disparate locations. This improvised structure has only underscored the need to reorganize existing administrative resources under the umbrella of our CCTS and for our CCTS to claim its own administrative resources as it develops unique programs to support, enhance and integrate the transformative initiatives across all key functions |
