Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine

The Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine (PCSOM) has joined with UK’s Center for Clinical and Translational Science to engage colleges and universities with Appalachian ties, healthcare providers, and community leaders with the goal of developing a shared research agenda focused on chronic health issues in Appalachia. PCSOM was founded by a group of Eastern Kentucky businessmen specifically to improve the delivery of health care to the people in the underserved areas of Appalachia. PCSOM graduates frequently complete residency programs in family medicine at the UK Medical Center or at the UK Center for Excellence in Rural Health-Hazard and remain to practice in rural Appalachia. Of greatest interest to the PCSOM are CCTS Community Engagement initiatives, including the annual Appalachian Health Summit, which speak to the core mission of the PCSOM, namely, to train physicians who will "serve the health care needs of communities in Eastern Kentucky and other Appalachian regions."
