Researcher Profile - Jody Clasey, PhD
Nickname: I have many…Jody Pody, Dr. J, JoJo, just to name a few.
Favorite subject in elementary, middle or high school: I always liked science and physiology.
Most hated subject in elementary, middle or high school: I wasn’t very good at rhetoric or English classes…..I like to “do” more than I like to write.
Most fun, most trouble or most successful science project: Most fun: A recent study that tested the body composition of 500 children ages 5 to 11 yrs. The children were fun to work with, asked great questions, and had lots of interesting things to say while they were being tested.
Motto: Every good scientist is just a “Curious George” or…Put your money in your head, that way no one can take it away from you.
First childhood memory: Playing outside with my brothers and sisters
Coolest piece of medical or scientific equipment ever used: Computed tomography (CT) analysis workstation to determine the abdominal visceral fat mass and the thigh muscle quantity and quality in human subjects.
Favorite hobby, pastime: I love doing outdoor activities and finishing or refinishing wood furniture.
Favorite music: I love all kinds of music except rap.
You love your collection of……Pins from around the nation and the world…A good reminder of the places I’ve gotten to visit.
Advice to students interested in pursuing a career in science, medicine, research: Don’t let what you don’t know scare you, trying new things is the fun part of learning…..Find the fun and the interesting in all that you do….Research is great because you not only get to ask the questions, you get to help answer the questions.
If you were an element or chemical what would you be and why: Hydrogen, because sometimes it’s nice to be number 1 and I would be involved in so many metabolic processes.
Non-scientific skill that has aided you in your career: Being comfortable talking to people and making them feel at ease while participating in studies.
Defining moment that brought you to your current career path: I took an Exercise Physiology class during my senior year in college….that was it, I found what I wanted to do!
Achievement or award you are most proud of: I received the University of Kentucky Alumni Association 2006 Great Teacher Award.
Pet: I don’t have one but many of my friends tell me I need a dog.
