Collaborative Educational Programs with Other Academic Units and Research Institutions

BIC is expanding and formalizing training and education programs by collaborating with nationally recognized institutions and experts, and will support professional development in biomedical informatics. For example, BIC will encourage UK personnel to engage in nationally recognized training programs such as the American Medical Informatics Association's 10x10 Partner Program.

To further this goal, the BIC has created a collaborative education liaison with Michael J. Becich, MD, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Informatics.

Community Outreach

At the clinical level, these efforts will also improve communication and support. The network will provide clinicians participating in the Kentucky Ambulatory Network with a link to the UK HealthCare Enterprise Electronic Medical Record system (EMR), thus enabling them to refer to a UK HealthCare provider seamlessly.

Implementing an electronic process to communicate information will improve patient care, particularly the coordination of chronic care between primary care provider and specialist providers, by facilitating information exchange and patient care coordination, decreasing the potential for patient error, and improving patient and physician satisfaction. These efforts are directly linked to BIC's efforts in developing ad evaluating the statewide EMR.
